TRAVELING TO UGANDA? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW. 

PASSPORT

Passport required.

Passport exemptions:

  • Nationals of Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda with a national ID card
  • Passengers with a laissez-passer issued by the United Nations traveling on duty.
  • Passengers with a laissez-passer issued by the organization of African Unity.
  • Passengers with a travel document (convention of 28 July 1951) issued to refugees.
  • Passengers with a travel document (convention of 28 September 1954) issued to stateless persons.
  • Passengers with a US travel document (form i-571) issued to refugees. An expired form i-571 is accepted with a renewal application (form i-131) which must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from date of arrival. If the country of birth is Uganda, the form i-131 must be valid on arrival.   
  • Nationals of Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Colombia, Czech Rep., Denmark, Djibouti, Finland, France, Guinea, Hungary, Iceland, Korea (Dem. People's Rep.), Liechtenstein, Madagascar, Netherlands, Norway, Palau, Paraguay, Philippines, Samoa (American), Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago and USA With an emergency passport.   
  • Nationals of Argentina, Belize, Benin, Bulgaria, Canada, Ecuador, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Namibia, Norway,  Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sao Tome And Principe, Suriname, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela And Zambia With a temporary passport.                              
  • Passengers with a British emergency or temporary passport.
  • Passengers with a Chinese Taipei (on the cover: Republic of China Taiwan) temporary passport.
 Document validity:
  • Passports and other documents accepted for entry must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the arrival date.                       
  • Passports and other documents accepted for entry issued to nationals of Uganda must be valid on arrival.                               
  • Passports and other documents accepted for entry issued to residents of Uganda must be valid on arrival.                               
  • US travel document (form i-571) issued to refugees must be valid on arrival.                  
 Admission and transit restrictions:
  • Admission and transit refused to holders of non-biometric passports issued to nationals of Somalia.                                    
  • Admission and transit refused to holders of Iraqi "S" series passports.  
 Military:
  • Same regulations as for passengers apply.

 

VISA ISSUANCE:

  • E-visas can be obtained before departure at https://visas.immigration.go.ug/. Passengers must have a printed e-visa confirmation.                                                 
  • Passengers with a British normal passport can obtain a visa on arrival.
  • Nationals of China (People's Rep.) with a normal passport can obtain a visa on arrival.
  • Passengers with a Macao (Sar China) passport can obtain a visa on arrival.
  • Passengers with a Chinese Taipei (on the cover: Republic of China Taiwan) normal passport can obtain a visa on arrival.
  • Passengers with "The Palestinian Authority" passport can obtain a visa on arrival.

  • passengers with a British emergency or temporary passport can obtain a visa on arrival
  • Nationals of Argentina, Belize, Benin, Bulgaria, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Namibia, Norway, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sao Tome And Principe, Suriname, Swaziland, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela And Zambia with a temporary passport can obtain a visa on arrival.
  • Passengers with a Chinese Taipei (on the cover: Republic Of China Taiwan) temporary passport can obtain a visa on arrival.   
  • Passengers with a consular, diplomatic, official, service or a special passport and their accompanying relatives can obtain a visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 3 months. They can apply to extend their stay.
  • Nationals of Italy and Namibia with an official passport and their accompanying relatives can obtain a visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 3 months. They can apply to extend their stay.
  • Passengers with a travel document (Convention of 28 July 1951) issued to refugees can obtain a visa on arrival.
  • Passengers with a travel document (Convention of 28 September 1954) issued to stateless persons can obtain a visa on arrival.
  • Passengers with a US travel document (Form I-571) issued to refugees can obtain a visa on arrival.
  • Passengers who transit for more than 24 hours can obtain a transit visa on arrival.
 Additional information:
  • Visitors are required to provide contact details of a person or organization in Uganda and an address and phone number of the place of stay in Uganda.
  •                                                                       

Warning: visitors not holding return/onward tickets could be refused entry.

HEALTH 

  • Passengers arriving within 6 days after leaving or transiting countries with risk of yellow fever transmission >tirgl/yfin and not holding a yellow fever vaccination certificate are subject to vaccination upon arrival and possible quarantine measures.
Exempt from yellow fever vaccination:
  • Children under 1 year of age.
  • Passengers transiting Uganda if not leaving the transit area
Recommended:
  • Vaccination against yellow fever for any passenger.
  • Malaria prophylaxis: malaria risk, mainly due to pfalciparum, exists throughout the year in the whole country.

 

AIRPORT TAX

No airport tax is levied on passengers upon embarking at the Airport

CUSTOMS 

Import:

  • Allowed free import by passengers of 18 years of age and over (except those returning from visits to Kenya and Tanzania):
    • 250 grams of tobacco products;          
    • 1 liter of spirits (including liquors) and 1 liter of wine;   
    • 1 pint of perfume and eau de toilette, of which not more than one quarter of a pint may be perfume;
    • Personal effects up to a value of max. USD 500.
Prohibited:
  • Importing (including transit) of domestic and wild birds and their products from countries affected by bird flu.

Note: Importers must obtain a sanitary import permit from the director of veterinary services if bringing these birds or their products. Meat and meat products or any product from domestic or wild poultry, must be declared and destroyed. 

Export:

  • Free export of a reasonable quantity of tobacco and/or tobacco products, alcoholic beverages and perfume is allowed. A special permit for game trophies is required.
 Pets:
  • Cats and dogs must be accompanied by a veterinarian good health certificate issued at the point of origin not earlier than 6 days before arrival in Uganda.
Baggage clearance:
  • Baggage is cleared at the first airport of entry in Uganda.
  • Exempt: baggage of transit passengers, which is cleared at the airport of final destination in or outside of Uganda.

CURRENCY

Import:

  • Foreign currencies: unlimited, provided declared on arrival.
  • Prohibited: local currency (Uganda shilling-UGX).
 Export:
  • Foreign currencies: up to the amount imported and declared on arrival.
  • Prohibited: local currency (Uganda shilling-UGX).
